Local, National and International Science Photography On Display

November 02, 2015

The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History will host the “Atomic STEaM Photography Show,” a special photo art exhibit, on display from November 7, 2015, through January 3, 2016. Individuals, both local and from all over the world, shared their photographic talent and eye for everything science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEaM), and a select number of photographs were chosen through the juried competition to be displayed at the nationally accredited, Smithsonian affiliated Museum.

Photos selected to show in the exhibit came from as far away as Milan, Italy, and range from the literal engineering feats of Albuquerque’s I-25 and I-40 highway interchange, to the abstract interpretation of science as seen incandescent light broken into its constituent spectral colors.

Any individual, from a professional photographer to a student with a camera phone, were invited to submit a photograph to the “Atomic STEaM Photography Competition” with the hope to not only win a cash prize but to also have their work on display at the Museum. All photographs submitted relate in some way to overall theme of science, technology, engineering, art or mathematics, and they were all open to interpretation by the photographer.

“This special exhibition provides us with an exciting opportunity to not only share the unbelievable talent for photography that members of our community possess, but it also allows us the opportunity to display what STEaM means to such a wide variety of people,” said Jim Walther, Director of the Museum. “It’s an inspirational exhibit, and we look forward to introducing STEM in an artistic capacity.”

Selected photographs will be announced on October 9, 2015, and the first, second and third place awards will be announced at the special reception held on Friday, November 6, 2015. This special reception will be held at the Museum on Friday, November 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, for a sneak peek into the exhibition.
