May 18: Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Day

Lion Dancers, taiko drumming, calligraphy and origami demonstrations, and many more exciting activities will fill the day on Saturday, May 18, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History. The Museum will be hosting the 17th Annual Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Day, celebrating the cultural traditions, ancestry, native languages, and unique experiences represented among ethnic groups from Asia and the Pacific.

Museum visitors will be treated to a beautiful cultural experience through performances, presentations, exhibits and activities, including food samples. Museum admission of $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and youth; children under 6 are free.

 

Schedule of Events on May 18th

  • 10:00 am - Opening Ceremonies
  • 10:30 am - Lion Dance and Martial Arts by Chinese Cultural Center & Lin's Martial Arts Academy
  • 11:15 am - Lecture on Anime, a Japanese Art Form, by the University of New Mexico's Anime Club
  • 12:00 pm - Thai Dance Performance by Wat Buddhamongkolnimit
  • 1:15 pm - Taiji Fan Dance by the New Mexico School of Chinese Language & Arts
  • 1:45 pm - Okinawa Dance Performance by Miyagi Ryu Okinawa Dance Group
  • 2:15 pm - Taiko Drumming by BK Taiko
  • ALL DAY - Ikebana Flower Arrangements by Ikebana International Chapter 41
  • ALL DAY - Ikebana Floral Demonstrations by Ichiyo School of Ikebana - Albuquerque Chapter
  • 11:00 am to 2:00 pm - Origami, Calligraphy and Brush Painting provided by the New Mexico School of Chinese Language & Arts
  • 11:30 am to 1:30 pm (or while food samples last) - Food Sampling provided by Talin Market, The Fragrant Leaf and Chopstix
