Given to the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History by a volunteer, this patch was issued by Pantex Atomic Energy for the Girl and Boy Scouts in Amarillo, Texas in 2005.
Displaying an interesting mix of visual references to Mickey Mouse and the Vault Boy, from the post-apocalyptic video game Fall Out, a mouse in a full hazmat suit gives a jolly thumbs up. The mouse is framed by the Boy Scouts of America logo on the left, the Girl Scouts of America to the right, and a symbol representing an atom below the feet and tail. All of these images are transposed on top of a brightly colored symbol for radioactivity.
The jumble of acronyms at the bottom of the patch from left to right stand for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the biomedical engineering society Alpha Eta Mu Beta (AEMB), and BWX Technologies, Inc., a company that specializes in supplying the US government with nuclear components and fuel.
This combination of sponsors suggests that this patch was created to pique interest in a future career in nuclear science amoung young people in scouting.
