Position: Part-time Summer Camp Counselor

Hours: Variable Hours/Week

Rate: $13-$15/ per hour, depending on experience and qualifications

This position is not eligible for major medical and additional benefits.

Position Purpose:

A summer camp counselor is responsible for assisting the camp teacher in managing classroom STEAM activities for participants enrolled in the “Science is Everywhere” summer day camps at the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History for children Pre-K through 6th grade.

Job Description:

Science is Everywhere! Camp Counselors support the lead teacher in guiding a multi-age group of campers through STEAM-oriented activities and experiences in the museum and on field trips. This part-time role requires availability of approximately 25+ hours per week, Monday through Friday, for the entire summer program.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate fully in week-long camp classes. Monday-Friday of chosen weeks.
  • Participating in group activities with all the campers.
  • Assisting the camp teacher with needs relevant to activity facilitation, classroom management, and materials management (including set-up for camp day and re-set for the following day).
  • Assist in ensuring campers’ safety during classroom and off-campus activities.
  • Monitoring mealtime with campers as the teacher breaks for lunch.
  • Oversees transitions to and from scheduled events.
  • Report all accidents/incidents to the camp teacher and Education leadership team.
  • Help maintain a classroom climate that nurtures and supports an informal and fun learning environment.
  • Assist in monitoring weekly off-campus field trips.
  • Attend the program orientation meeting (May 17th) and one post-camp meeting (TBD).

Schedule:

Summer Science is Everywhere Camps at the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History run for ten weeks, from June 2 to August 8, 2025. Each week, campers are divided into three age groups: Pre-K–1st grade, 2nd–3rd grade, and 4th–6th grade.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be an excellent multi-tasker with a genuine passion for working with and empowering young people. Applicants should be patient, fun-loving, and confident in their ability to motivate and assist campers in everything from learning new skills to developing positive adult and peer relationships. This person should be able to work in a team-oriented and fast-paced environment with excellent communication skills.

Candidates must have 1-2 years of experience working with children, especially ages 4-12, in a general childcare setting, teaching, or camp counseling. Applicant must demonstrate skills in conflict mediation and have a flexible schedule daily and weekly.
