The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History Offers FREE STEM Education Kits on Radiation and Nuclear Energy for Schools Serving American Indian and Alaska Native Students

The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History is proud to announce the launch of a new, free education kit designed to empower American Indian and Alaska Native middle and high school students with engaging STEM learning experiences. The kit, focused on radiation and nuclear energy, provides teachers with ready-to-use lesson plans and hands-on activities to bring complex scientific concepts to life in the classroom.

This comprehensive kit aims to connect core scientific principles to the world around students. It will enable students to:

  • Explore the fundamentals of radiation: Understand its sources, properties, and interactions.
  • Demystify nuclear energy: Learn about the process of nuclear fission and its applications.
  • Connect science to real-world issues: Discuss the benefits and challenges of nuclear technology.
  • Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills: Engage in hands-on experiments and investigations.

Who Can Request a Kit?

This valuable education kit is available at no cost to teachers of middle and high school students who are:

  • Enrolled in Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) schools.
  • Attending schools located on federally recognized American Indian or Alaska Native reservations.
  • Attending schools situated on tribal land.
  • Or have a majority percentage of American Indian or Alaska Native students.

What is Included in Your Kit?

Each kit contains a wealth of resources, including:

  • A binder with detailed lesson plans and engaging activities.
  • A Geiger Counter for hands-on radiation detection.
  • A Visualizing Radiation Cloud Chamber to witness radiation in action.

This education kit extends the STEM learning opportunities offered at the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History, bringing the excitement of scientific discovery directly into classrooms.

The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History, located at 601 Eubank SE in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was established in 1969 and chartered by Congress in 1991 as a fascinating place to learn about the story of the Atomic Age, from early research on nuclear development to today’s peaceful uses of nuclear technology. Visitors can explore how nuclear science continues to influence our world. Through permanent and changing exhibits and displays, the museum strives to present the diverse applications of nuclear science in the past, present, and future, along with the stories of the field’s pioneers.
