Maria Sultemeier Named Volunteer and Community Outreach Manager

[Albuquerque, NM] – The Museum of Nuclear Science & History is proud to announce the promotion of Maria Sultemeier to the position of Volunteer and Community Outreach Manager, effective February 2, 2026. Sultemeier, who previously served as the museum’s Volunteer Coordinator, will take on an expanded leadership role overseeing the growth and strategic direction of the museum's volunteer programs and community partnerships.

In her new capacity, Sultemeier will oversee a dedicated team of approximately 40 volunteers. These individuals serve in critical public-facing roles, including acting as expert tour guides, operating the museum’s interactive science carts, and supporting large-scale exhibitions and special events.

“Volunteers are the spark that pushes our mission forward,” said Sultemeier. “Their passion, skill, and joy in giving back expand what the museum can achieve—and they teach me something new every single day. They broaden what I understand and deepen why our work matters.”

A Proven Leader in Civic Engagement

Sultemeier brings a wealth of experience in community building and journalism to her new role. A graduate of Columbia College, Chicago, she holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. This background has honed her ability to tell the museum’s story through the lens of its people.

Beyond her work at the museum, Sultemeier is a deeply active member of the Albuquerque community:

• Board Leadership: Since January 2025, she has served on the Board of Directors for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), New Mexico Chapter.
• City Involvement: She is an active participant and regular presenter in the City of Albuquerque’s Civic Engagement Department quarterly roundtables, contributing to the city's broader dialogue on public participation.
